I understand the theory that cooking foods may destroy valuable enzymes and the body's must take from its finite store of enzymes to assist in digestion of the food. I also know that after eating raw foods for any length of time, I feel great! So then, what is all the discussion about needing meat in our diets? Some well known used-to-be raw foodists and other health pioneers are saying that a raw vegan diet may not be suitable to consume forever. The opinions differ somewhat although some of them believe meat in the diets is necessary for DHA, an essential fatty acid, presumably not available in a plant based diet. From my understanding, DHA is what nourishes our brain and I think it also plays a role in eye health. From my study on this "issue" I learned that EFA's are ample in some nuts, seeds, and plant foods, just not the essential DHA. However, with even more research on DHA I discovered that there is an available product which contains DHA from an algae, and algae qualifies as vegan. I also found that, given sufficient EFA's in our diet from vegetable sources (avocados and walnuts for example.), our body can actually manufacture usable DHA from these fats. Granted, it might be more "work" than you would like to put on your body, and it may require some extra nutritional compounds that may be helpful in different parts of the body. However, with the abundance of more digestible nutrients from raw foods, that might not be a problem. However, as stated earlier, a algae source of DHA is now on the market. I have no intention to discuss the consideration that protein isn't available from vegan foods because I hope by now that idea has been proven wrong, but another talked-about concern surrounding the raw foods diet is the deficiency of the essential B12 vitamin, that is thought to just be available from animal products. A number of raw foodies will say the same thing and then try and market a plant derived supplement with B12 that "they use themselves". In closing I would like to give you my opinion on the raw foods diet for longer lifespan. To be honest I don't actually know. Since I am not sure about going on a raw diet indefinitely, I stick to a high raw, high plant based diet unless I am on a cleanse.
